The designing of the church started before World War I. But the church and the adjoining parsonage on the east were erected only in 1930-1933. Two side wings which would have shaped the building into a cross were never built. The present side wing on the north side was thrown out only after 1950.

The Church of the Cross underwent some slight damages during World War II. There was a car service station in the post-war years. The building was almost completely destroyed by the great fire and the roof crashed down. After reconstruction in the 1950s there was a pilot factory of experimental fishing gear. By the early 1980s the church building was abandoned and began to decay.

In 1988 the church building was transferred to the Russian Orthodox Church. In 1991-1994 the reconstruction work under the guidance of architect Yuri Zabuga was carried out there. In 1994 the Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross was consecrated by Metropolitan of Smolensk and Kaliningrad Kirill in honor of the Exaltation of the Precious and Life-giving Cross of the Lord. In 1995 the lower aisle was consecrated in the name of Blessed prince St. Alexander Nevsky.
