About Kaliningrad
Welcome to the Kaliningrad Region, the westernmost region of the Russian Federation!
The region has no direct land borders with the main area of Russia. The southern neighbor of the Kaliningrad Region is Poland, in the East and North the Region borders with Lithuania. The Baltic Sea washes the western shores of the Region. The Region has two freshwater bays: the Curonian Lagoon, and the Vistula Lagoon.
At present, there are approximately one million residents in the Region, half of them reside in the main city, i.e. Kaliningrad.
The area of the Kaliningrad Region is moderate, just 15,100 square kilometers, the maximum length from West to East is 205 km, and 108 km from North to South, so you can cross the entire territory from one border to another within a day!
There are no high mountains in the region, and some coastal districts are located below the sea level. In order to avoid flooding, since 16th century, they started to enclose land plots with dams and build mills to pump out the water. It was then that polders appeared featuring complex drainage system requiring continuous control; however, these lands are highly fertile. It is in the Kaliningrad Region that one will find the largest polder arrays.
Kurshkaya Kosa (the Curonian Spit), a national park included in the list of UNESCO World Natural Heritage, is the most outlandish "cultural landscape" created by both natural forces and human talents. It is a must-visit site during your vacation in Kaliningrad!
Today, Kaliningrad is an attractive city for living and traveling. The mild climate, the beauty of the architecture, the proximity of the sea, and the rich cultural heritage make the region one of the most popular with tourists.
