Railway Gate
One of the seven remaining city gates of Kaliningrad.
The gates are located under the roadway of Gvardeyskiy Avenue, next to the monument to 1200 soldiers. Through the gates there is a pedestrian path leading to the park, located behind the monument. There is an inscription with the date of its construction on the gates: 1866-1869. It is located on the castle stone gate.
The Railway Gate was designed by architect Ludwig von Aster (he is also the author of the Ausfal Gate project). The railway leading to Pillau (now Baltiysk) passed through the gates. After the fortification structures of the city center were removed, Deutschordenring Street (now: Gvardeiskii Avenue) was laid along the former shaft. Thus, since then, the gates are hardly noticeable and rather resemble a tunnel through a road embankment. After World War II, the traffic on the railway gateway stopped as a new railway line was built. Nevertheless, the rails from the old road persisted until the end of the nineties. Later, on the road of the former railway, a footpath was built, which leads from Moskovskii Avenue through the Railway Gate to the park behind the monument to 1,200 soldiers.
For several years, the "F.V. Bessel Center for the Promotion of Science" operated in the building. In 2023, it was transferred to the volunteer organization "Ruin Keepers" and became their headquarters.
