The monument to the soldiers of the 11th army who died in the assault on Königsberg is a sacred place for every Kaliningrad citizen. Opened in September 1945, it became the country's first memorial dedicated to the heroism of the Soviet people in the war against fascism. The initiative to create a monument belonged to the Military Council of the 11th Army, commanded by Colonel-General K. N. Galitsky. Moscow architects and Lithuanian sculptors worked on the creation of the memorial. It was built by soldiers – guards in memory of fellow soldiers. On May 9, 1960, at the foot of the obelisk, the Eternal Flame was lit.
Victory Park was founded in Kaliningrad in 2000 as a gift to veterans in honor of the 55th anniversary of the Victory in the Great Patriotic War. The park has the Monument to 1,200 Guardsmen, the Memorial Monument to Intelligence Soldiers, and the Eternal Flame. In the immediate vicinity of the Monument to 1,200 Guardsmen are located the Ausfalstor Gates – one of the preserved gates of Königsberg. In 1993, St. George Orthodox Chapel was built on the top cover of the gate dedicated to Soviet soldiers who died when assaulting Königsberg. The park also has a pond and walking paths with many benches.
