The theater was founded in Kaliningrad in 1947. He opened his first season on November 5, 1947 with the play "A Guy from Our Town" based on the piece by Konstantin Simonov.

The theatre moved several times; the building, in which it is located now, is the building of the German Drama Theatre, restored after the war, with a large hall for 931 seats and a smaller stage, reconstructed according to the project of architect P. V. Kuhtenkov.

The theater participated in the festivals "Baltic Theatre Spring" (1987-1991), "Elblon Theatre Spring" (1987), "Voices of History" in Vologda (1991), "Russian Comedy" in Rostov-on-Don (1994), Moscow international festival named after A. P. Chekhov (1998), "Rainbow" in St. Petersburg (2003), "Baltic Festival" in Klaipeda (2003).
